Why it matters
A proud lid catches snow-clearing equipment and takes the blade, the frame or both. A sunken one becomes a trip hazard on a walkway and a claim waiting to happen in a parking lot. Settlement around the structure spreads outward into the pavement and turns a half-day adjustment into a full excavation. In parking lots and driving lanes, correct grade is a safety issue before it is a maintenance one.
Common questions
- Why does a manhole end up below grade?
- Three things, usually. The ground around the structure settles while the structure itself does not, a new asphalt overlay raises the road surface around an unchanged frame, or frost movement lifts and drops the frame over a winter and it does not return to where it started. All three leave the lid sitting proud of or below the surface.
- What does a manhole out of grade actually cost me?
- Every vehicle that crosses it strikes the frame instead of rolling over it. That loosens the frame, cracks the chimney below it and breaks up the surrounding pavement, so a small adjustment becomes a structural repair. A low lid also collects water, and a proud one catches plow blades.
- What is inflow and infiltration, and why does the lid matter?
- Inflow is surface water entering the sanitary system where it should not — through pick holes and vent holes in the lid, a gap under the frame, or cracks in the chimney. It is clean water you then pay to treat, and in a heavy rain it is the difference between a system with capacity and one that surcharges. Sealing the top of the structure is the cheapest place to address it.
- Can manholes be adjusted in winter?
- Some work can be, but frost in the ground and cold-weather patching both limit what will hold. Adjustment and reinstatement done in frozen ground often has to be revisited, so unless the structure is unsafe it is usually better scheduled for the open season.
- Do you handle the surface repair as well?
- Yes. The saw cut, compacted backfill and patch are part of the job, because an adjustment that leaves a poor patch around it fails from the edges in. The aim is a surface that carries traffic loads rather than one that looks finished on the day.
